The 424 MKII is inspired by the humble 4-track cassette recorders that helped shape countless demos, recordings, and creative ideas long before pristine digital recording became the norm. While many players chase perfect fidelity, this pedal embraces the character, grit, and unique imperfections that made those old machines so memorable.
Built around the channel strip of a classic 424 MKII recorder, this circuit captures the distinctive response and coloration of vintage cassette recording gear. One of its most defining traits is its unusually low input impedance, which interacts with guitar pickups in a way that naturally softens high frequencies and adds a uniquely textured character. For players who prefer a more traditional signal path, a switchable buffer allows you to retain clarity and proper impedance matching whenever needed.
The result is a pedal that delivers everything from clean boost tones to rich overdrive, distortion, and even fuzz-like textures. The active EQ section offers a wide range of tonal shaping options, while the internally boosted 18-volt headroom provides plenty of punch and dynamic range when pushing an amp.
Part of the charm of the 424 MKII is its authenticity. The controls behave much like the original circuit that inspired it, including some unconventional tapers and a trim control that operates in its own unique way. In low-impedance mode (side button disengaged), the pedal performs best placed first in your signal chain. When the buffer is engaged (side button pressed in), it can be positioned anywhere in the chain with excellent results.
Power Requirements
Operates on a standard 9V DC center-negative power supply (Boss-style)
Current draw: approximately 30mA
Battery operation is supported and activates automatically when a cable is plugged into the input and no external power supply is connected
Do not exceed 9V DC, as higher voltages may damage the pedal and/or power supply
Simple, gritty, and surprisingly versatile, the 424 MKII captures the unmistakable character of vintage cassette recording gear in a pedalboard-friendly format.
