The latest from Benson Amps has arrived at Sims Music: a temperature-controlled fuzz with a twist! During the design process, Benson explored some groundbreaking ideas, including a voltage-controlled error correction circuit aimed at biasing a single germanium transistor. While it didn’t quite work for their fuzz circuit (fuzz pedals tend to be notoriously sensitive to transistor gain), this approach turned out to be ideal for achieving a stable and reliable Germanium Clean Boost.
Benson didn’t stop there. They took the time to solve other limitations traditionally associated with germanium transistors in clean boosts. They expanded the input headroom to prevent unwanted distortion and raised the input impedance, addressing issues that would typically thin out bass frequencies or clash with other pedals and instruments in the signal chain.
The result is a Germanium Clean Boost that’s free from the quirks of classic germanium designs—no temperature sensitivity, drift, or compromised input impedance and headroom. When first powered on, it takes just ten seconds for the error correction circuit to bias the transistor properly. After that, the boost offers a truly unique tonal experience. With the pedal engaged, guitar signals are given a smoother, more detailed character—similar to a compressor but distinctly different. Many who’ve tested it have noted its ability to emphasize the desirable aspects of a tone while dialing down the unwanted ones. It shines on bass, adds natural warmth to acoustic pickups, and, of course, can push an amp into overdrive with ease.
Power Supply:
The pedal is designed for use with a 9V DC Boss-style center-negative power supply. There’s also room for a battery, which activates when an instrument cable is plugged in, provided no external power is connected. Avoid using more than 9V DC to prevent damage to the pedal or power supply.
